Outfit7, the Slovenian developer that’s aiming to become a toy company on the order of Mattel or Hasbro through talking character mobile apps, said its latest release Talking Tom Cat 2 did more than 1 million downloads in a single day this week.
Entertainment conglomerates such as Walt Disney spend billions developing popular franchises. However, they’ve had mixed success translating those film, television, and theme park characters to smartphones, where more and more eyeballs are glued. The makers of some popular iPhone games are hoping they’ll have an easier time going in the opposite direction, and are trying to launch cross-media franchises based on their hit digital characters. “The new entertainment medium is apps,” says Paul A. Baldwin, chief marketing officer of Palo Alto (Calif.)-based Outfit7, whose Talking Tom app has been downloaded 50 million times.
The App Store is turning into a proving ground for Saturday morning cartoons, which means the screeching cat and his friends could soon be on a TV, cereal box and onesie near you.
This week’s Economist cover story, “A New Tech Bubble,” has people abuzz once again about how Silicon Valley is ripe for another fall. According to the article, irrational exuberance has gripped tech industry investors, and it’s only a matter of time before the general public is left holding the check, just like they did in 2001.
Outfit7, the maker of character-based mobile apps, recently passed 100 million downloads in just 10 months on the Apple App Store. That places the company in rarefied air with apps that have become pop culture cross-overs such as Rovio’s Angry Birds.
Last week, app developer Outfit7 announced a milestone with more than 100 million apps downloaded. So how do you follow up a feat such as this? By introducing your latest and greatest character, then having it skyrocket to the number one entertainment app within 48 hours.
It looks like nine-figure numbers may soon become the benchmark by which we judge successful mobile developers.
Just a month after Finland’s Rovio passed the mark, Slovenia’s Outfit7 also crossed the 100 million downloads on the back of a series of talking character apps. We profiled the company back in January: its ambitions are big. The vision isn’t to be another mobile developer. It’s to become a toy company on the order of Mattel or Hasbro through the use of smartphones with touchscreens.
Outfit7, the company behind the fast-selling Talking Friends apps, is often compared to Rovio, the successful team behind Angry Birds. But at the pace the company is growing, the better comparison may be to a next-generation Disney. That’s at least what executives are hoping prove true. And they have some impressive numbers that suggest they’re on the way to that goal.
Angry Birds isn’t the only animal game selling like crazy on the App Store. Outfit7’s Talking Tom Cat and other titles in the Talking Friends series have been downloaded more than 60 million times in the past six months.
Mobile application developer Outfit7, maker of the hugely popular Talking Friends series of apps, has announced that its iOS and Android apps have hit the 100 million downloads milestone, roughly 3 months after hitting the 60 million downloads milestone.
Outfit7 last year managed to quietly rack up more than 60 million downloads of its Talking Friends apps, led by its breakout hit Talking Tom Cat. The company, which is now up to about 72 million downloads, has built a fast-growing empire by side-stepping the mobile gaming market and constructing a modern toy with communication at its heart. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, legos and Transformers may have filled the childhood bedrooms of today’s entrepreneurs but Slovenian company Outfit7 is betting that the toy of choice for kids nowadays is a smartphone or the iPad. And they have 60 million downloads to prove it.
This is a company that’s definitely on a roll, and like Angry Birds developer Rovio, it has strong European roots. The startup has no less than 18 apps scheduled for a 2011 release. Keep an eye on this one; we certainly will.
If you have an iPhone, iPad or Android phone, chances are you have at least one “Talking Friends” app on your favorite device, especially if you have kids. Which is it? Tom Cat? Santa? Roby the Robot? Rex the Dinosaur? Harry the Hedgehog? Or is it Bacteria John?
Kids may abolsutely adore those quirky apps, but apparently building and selling them is quite a solid business to boot.
Kathie Lee and Hoda, hosts of the NBC’s The Today Show, picked Outfit7′s Talking Santa as a featured Holiday season app and Talking Santa said: “Ho, Ho, Ho….Merry Thirst-day Kathie Lee and Hoda! I’ve been watching you..you’ve been very naughty this year.. Ho, Ho, Ho!”
Punch Santa. Kick Santa. Steal his cookies. Make him laugh. Make him talk (He repeats after you). Be naughty or nice. It doesn’t matter when it comes to what Apple has designated as the #1 app in the Holiday Cheer category. Talking Santa For IPhone by Outfit7,which costs $1.99 to download, is also the top app in the entertainment category in 35 countries right now.
